Active Engine Co. #3

On March 10, 1924, under the leadership of Ex-Chief Ernie Kretsman, Active Engine Company #3 was chartered by 24 local citizens.  The beginnings of the Active Company were quite humble, using a hand-drawn hose cart.  Late in 1924, a third Model T Ford pumper was purchased by the Village and Active Company joined the modern era of fire-fighting.

In 1930, plans were approved for a new firehouse, and in February 1931, Active Company moved its quarters to the present location on Atlantic Avenue.   Unfortunately, the Active House was a victim of fire on a dark night in June of 1970.  Damage to the House was moderate, nevertheless the building was quickly restored through the spirit and the efforts of Active Company Members

Besides receiving a new firehouse in 1931, Active Company also received a new Mack pumper.  This engine was the most modern of its era, with a pumping capacity of 500 g.p.m. and a battery operated siren.  In 1938, the Village purchased a Ward LaFrance pumper for the active Company.  After 20 years of service and untold numbers of fires and drill, this engine was retired in February of 1958 and replaced with an American LaFrance pumper.

In 1971, Active Company received its first diesel powered fire truck.   This American LaFrance pumper had the largest pumping capacity in the Department, 1500 g.p.m.  The power of this new pumper was immediately tested by operating for 72 hours straight at the Universal Millwork Fire.  Simultaneous with the Department's 100th Anniversary, Active Company has accepted delivery of a Spartan/Saulsbury closed cab pumper.  This new pumper will bring many technical advancements to the Department.

On the occasion of the Floral Park Fire Department's 100th Anniversary, Active Company salutes the successes and achievements of this fin organization.  The Village of Floral Park has been well served through the years by the dedicated efforts of the men and women of the Department.
